hunt Overview & experience
This hunt is a fantastic opportunity to target one of Alaska’s most sought-after species. If taken seriously and executed in an educated and thoughtful manner, the trip can be an experience of a lifetime.
Brown bear hunts take place on the Alaska Peninsula, which has the highest bear density on the planet. Bears are hunted while feeding on salmon along streams, on open hillsides covered in cranberries and blueberries, and in the spring around dens.
We utilize float planes, wheel planes, ski planes (spring hunts), boats, and rafts to reach remote hunting areas. Hunts are conducted using spot-and-stalk methods, requiring patience, careful observation, and thoughtful decision-making. Once a bear is located, hunters use the terrain and wind to make a careful approach for an ethical shot.
sEASONS & availability
Our brown bear hunts are offered during both spring and fall, with each season providing a unique hunting experience on the Alaska Peninsula.
Spring Expeditions (Apr – May)
Spring hunts begin as bears emerge from their dens and spread across the mountainsides in search of food. Using ski planes and snowmachines where conditions require, hunters spend long days glassing open country before making careful spot-and-stalk approaches.
Fall Campaigns (Aug – Sep)
Fall hunts focus on bears feeding heavily before winter. Depending on conditions, you’ll hunt salmon streams and berry-covered hillsides, glassing from strategic vantage points before planning a careful stalk.

Logistics & Transport
Your hunt begins when you arrive in Iliamna, where a Bushwhack Adventures staff member meets you at the airport. After a brief stop at our lakeside lodge to organize gear and verify licenses, tags, and paperwork, you’ll board a light bush aircraft for the flight into your spike camp.
Depending on weather and arrival times, you may spend your first night at the lodge before flying to camp. Due to Alaska’s same-day airborne hunting regulations, hunting begins the morning after arriving in camp.
gear / preparation
We provide the camp, meals, and field infrastructure. Hunters should arrive with a reliable .30-caliber rifle or larger, quality optics, waterproof clothing, broken-in boots, chest waders, and layered clothing suitable for temperatures ranging from 0°F to 70°F.

FAQS
Do I need to worry about bears?
No. Bears should be respected, but no client or employee has ever been injured or killed by a bear. Furthermore, no bear has ever needed to be shot in Defense of Life and Property (DLP). Unlike the bears in the American West, these bears are hunted and generally fear man. Enjoy seeing bears- you’re in one of the world’s last wildernesses.
What other animals can I shoot
Black bears, wolves, and wolverines can all be shot in addition to bears. Tags are required for each of these, except wolf. DO NOT shoot caribou, as there currently is no non-resident season.
Do I need a water fi lter?
Bringing a water fi lter is a personal choice. I don’t use one, and out of the thousands of hunting and fi shing clients who have drank water, only three have ever gotten sick. Drink from fast-moving water, not stagnant ponds and avoid beavers.
What is the best advice for the hunt?
Be quiet! Bears hear very well and are shy animals. Whisper with your hunting partner(s) the entire hunt.
